Independent since 1143, established its definite continental borders in 1297, being one of the oldest European countries. Located at the utmost southwest point of the Iberian Peninsula, its location along the Atlantic coast has determined, since the old times, its marine vocation.

Portugal has an extension of 91.985 Km2 including its archipelagos of the Açores and Madeira Island within the Atlantic Ocean. Its population is just above 11 millions inhabitants.

Its richful monumental artistic and archaeological patrimony is a testimony not only of those 850 years of history and encounters with far away cultures, but also of the presence of previous civilizations, sample of all can be found in its capital, Lisbon.
